Ford 10R80 transmission problems have caused a class action lawsuit in Canada which alleges the 10-speed transmissions make driving dangerous.

The 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission was built as a joint venture between General Motors and Ford, but the transmissions have caused government investigations and many complaints.

The Ford Canada class action includes these vehicles:

  • 2018-present Ford Expedition
  • 2018-present Ford Mustang
  • 2019-present Ford Ranger
  • 2017-present Ford F-150
  • 2018-present Lincoln Navigator

The lawsuit was filed a few weeks after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a federal investigation into Ford F-150 trucks that suddenly downshifted while driving. The class action says Transport Canada also opened an investigation after receiving 11 complaints alleging a downshift problem in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with 10R80 transmissions.

The NHTSA investigation includes about 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks following 138 owner complaints about transmission problems that caused unexpected downshifts. Truck owners complain their rear wheels lock when driving highway speeds as the transmissions shift into first gear.

A driver will immediately be faced with a bundle of nerves when trying to focus on acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. The lawsuit alleges the 10R80 transmission problems wear out the clutch, clutch plate and other components that lead to complete transmission failure. A driver will also be looking at an expensive chore to replace the 10R80 transmission.

Ford Motor supposedly knew the 10R80 transmission problems were there in 2018 but continued to sell the vehicles listed in the class action lawsuit. Vehicle owners were not warned about the alleged 10R80 transmission problems and may not learn about the defects until the vehicle begins lurching forward when shifting from PARK to DRIVE.

Ford drivers also complain about their vehicles shuddering and harsh shifting of the 10R80 transmission. The problems are allegedly caused by contamination of the clutch by transmission gear oil or bearing grease. The class action also says there may be design defects in the transmission control modules controlling the gear shifts.

The contamination supposedly occurs when the "seals in the transmission housing, which are meant to keep the fluids inside the transmission, fail, causing the dry clutch to become contaminated by gear oil and bearing grease."

"Repeated shuddering results in rapid deterioration of the clutches, requiring clutch replacement. The shuddering is not resolved by clutch replacement. A new clutch will improve performance for a period of time but inevitably will deteriorate and have to be replaced over and over again. In other words the repair does not and cannot permanently remedy the situation contrary to the warranty obligations...." — Ford 10R80 transmission lawsuit

According to the owner who sued, a permanent fix is unlikely without a transmission redesign and replacement of the existing transmission.

The Ford Canada 10R80 transmission lawsuit was filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia: Lawrence Hine v. Ford Motor Company, et al.

The plaintiff is represented by Charney Lawyers Professional Corporation.
