Mazda CX-5 brake pads that squeak or grind will get some attention from Mazda, at least for owners of the 2013-2014 Mazda CX-5.
Mazda has issued a technical service bulletin, TSB 04-005/15, for owners who complain about rear brakes that wear out and cause a loud grinding or squeaking sound. The Mazda CX-5 rear outer brake pads will show severe wear while the inner pads show little or no wear.
Owners of the 2013-2014 Mazda CX-5 have told CarComplaints.com about the problem and the cost associated with fixing the brake pads.
"Started hearing metallic squeaking and scraping from the rear. Took the car to the Mazda dealer last Friday and they found "3141 FOUND ALL ROTORS AND PADS HEAT SCORCHED AND GLAZED. SUGGESTED FRONT AND REAR ROTOR RESURFACE, PAD BUFF, AND HARDWARE LUBRICATION. CUSTOMER DECLINED ALL RECOMMEND WORK AT THIS TIME." I even printed out the TSB so the techs would know what to look for and the service manager told me to take it with me and that they already have everything they need.... The total estimate for the repairs was $588. They said it's not covered under warranty." - 2013 Mazda CX-5 owner / Franklin, Tennessee
Another 2013 CX-5 owner described exactly the same grinding sounds coming from the rear brake pads.
"I started hearing a metal grinding sound on the rear driver side of my Mazda CX5 with 28,000. I was told the rotors and pads were gone and needed to be replaced. I drive all highways to and from work. The parts were not available and I was driving on used pads for about 1 month and they started to make the same grinding sound." - 2013 Mazda CX-5 owner / Lawrence, Michigan
Mazda says CX-5 brake pads can be affected by road salt used in colder weather, causing the brakes to stay partially applied because of rust on the outer rear brake pads.
The Mazda CX-5 rear brakes TSB has been issued before but Mazda says this latest bulletin supersedes the previous bulletins. The automaker says this latest bulletin, 04-005/15, was previously issued in October 2015, and TSB 04-003/14 was sent to dealers in February 2014.
The updated CX-5 TSB says the bulletin is not limited to cars under 12 months/12,000 miles and the repair will be covered under Mazda’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty term of 36 months/36,000 miles.
Mazda dealers will diagnose the condition and if confirmed, install modified rear brake pads, new caliper anti-rattle clips, clean the calipers of rust and apply high-temp grease to the caliper slides and replace the rear rotors if necessary.
Owners of the 2013-2014 Mazda CX-5 who have questions about the brake pad TSB should call Mazda at 800-222-5500.
