Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 900 model year 2016 GLC300 and 2016 GLC300 4Matic SUVs because the airbags can deploy in your face for no reason. In addition, while you're getting hit with the airbag, the engine may stall.
Mercedes says the steering column has a wiring harness that is incorrectly routed. The automaker says the wiring harness can rub against materials and parts because of the incorrect routing of the wiring. The airbag can unexpectedly deploy or the engine can stall if the wiring chafes enough.
Mercedes further says chafing of the wiring harness at the steering column adjustment spindle could cause failures of the turn signal, gear selector, electronic stability control and power steering.
The automaker says a driver will receive warning messages in the instrument cluster about failures of everything except the airbag. In the case of the airbags, a driver will have no warning the device is getting ready to deploy.
The recalled 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 SUVs were manufactured June 16, 2015, to November 3, 2015, and the 2016 GLC300 4Matics were built July 16, 2015, to November 3, 2015.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC300 recall will begin in April 2016. Dealers will inspect the wiring harnesses and re-route them if needed. Mercedes says it will replace any damaged harnesses.
