Porsche says the problem was caused by a software programming error that may provide drivers with only yellow warning messages that are shown in the multi-functional displays.
Porsche ordered a recall earlier in 2019 for the same problems, so engineers developed new software to ensure the red brake pad warning lights continued to illuminate if the brake pads were worn.
But Porsche learned the warning lights would remain illuminated in all conditions except for two menu sub-levels of Map mode and Night Vision mode. In those two modes the brake pad warning lights weren't illuminated continuously.
Engineers also determined many vehicles could be affected by the problem, but those vehicles weren't included in the previous recall.
More than 44,120 of the vehicles are recalled in the U.S. and more than 6,000 are recalled in Canada.
Porsche dealers will reprogram the instrument clusters when the recall begins in the U.S. on December 15, 2019.
U.S. owners may contact Porsche at 800-767-7243 and use recall number AKB8.
Porsche customers in Canada may call 800-767-7243.
