Fiat Chrysler (FCA) is recalling 25,000 model year 2019 Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X SUVs in the U.S. and another 43 in Canada because of software problems.

Chrysler says the occupant restraint controllers were built with software errors that may disable the passive safety features, although the automaker didn't say which features are affected.

The restraint controllers have “special features/function configuration” memory that may have been incorrectly updated when certain diagnostic service tools were used. The features that can inadvertently become disabled are those that are controlled by the occupant restraint controllers.

According to FCA, the problem can increase "the potential risk and severity of occupant injury in a crash."

The components were manufactured by Bosch and the U.S. vehicles were built from March 12, 2018, through April 3, 2019.

Fiat and Jeep dealers will update the occupant restraint controller module software when the recall begins May 30, 2019.

Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X owners in the U.S. may call the automaker at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number V42.

Canadian customers may call FCA at 800-465-2001.

CarComplaints.com has owner-reported complaints about the Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade.
