Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 3,000 vehicles because the front seatbacks may not completely lock, possibly allowing the seatbacks to fold forward in a crash.

Mercedes first learned of possible problems from the supplier in May 2017, causing engineers to investigate the sub-supplier to determine the root cause. The sub-supplier found a bad batch of seatback levers that had faulty locking mechanisms, sending the supplier and Mercedes back to the drawing board to rework the seatbacks.
Mercedes says the right-side locks are the only ones affected and owners won't be warned by lights or messages if the mechanisms malfunction.
The automaker followed-up the investigation by using crash simulations and concluded a recall was the only way to ensure occupants won't have unnecessary problems in a crash.
The seatback recall should begin May 25, 2018, when Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace any affected seatback locks.
