Toyota and Lexus are recalling an additional 601,000 vehicles to replace Takata airbag inflators, part of a Takata recall expansion involving more than 3 million inflators affecting multiple automakers.
This latest batch of models includes the following:
- 2009-2010 and 2013 Scion xB
- 2009-2010 and 2013 Toyota Corolla
- 2009-2010 and 2013 Toyota Corolla Matrix
- 2009-2010 Toyota Yaris
- 2010 and 2013 Toyota 4Runner
- 2013 Toyota Sienna
- 2009-2010 and 2013 Lexus IS 250 / 350
- 2010-2013 Lexus IS 250C / 350C
- 2009-2010 and 2013 Lexus IS-F
- 2009-2010 Lexus ES 350
- 2010 and 2013 Lexus GX 460
All the airbag inflators involved in this recall are for the passenger sides.
The airbags are at risk of exploding due to a combination of age, moisture and the condition of the metal inflators. At least 20 people have been killed worldwide and more than 200 injured.
As of November 2017, 19 automakers had recalled about 46 million Takata inflators in about 34 million vehicles, with Toyota recalling more than 5 million of those inflators. Toyota and Lexus have replaced less than half of those inflators, and this latest recall will only delay the completion of repairs.
By 2019, as many as 70 million Takata inflators will have been recalled in the U.S.
Toyota didn't provide an exact recall date, other than affected owners will be contacted by mail in March 2018.
Lexus and Toyota dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflators on some of the vehicles, and front passenger airbag assemblies in the rest.
Affected owners with questions should call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or Lexus at 800-255-3987.
