Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling 470,000 cars and SUVs to repair possible problems with the active head restraints that should automatically move forward in certain rear impact crashes.
The restraints are "active" because they help to prevent whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions.
FCA says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) inquired about possible problems with the head restraints in 2012 Jeep Liberty SUVs and 2012-2013 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger cars.
The automaker opened an internal investigation and engineers determined there were problems with the occupant restraint control modules that can degrade.
A vehicle that experiences component failure will likely let a driver know by activating a warning light, something that is an indicator it's time to contact an FCA dealer.
The automaker says it's unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the occupant restraint control modules.
Included in the recall are more than 414,000 vehicles in the U.S., about 24,893 are in Canada, another 9,488 in Mexico and more than 21,000 outside of North America.
Chrysler will start notifying affected owners in November 2017, and dealers will replace the occupant restraint control modules.
NHTSA has not released details about the recall, but owners who have questions may call the automaker at 800-853-1403.
