Lexus is recalling about 18,000 model year 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrid cars that could enter fail-safe mode because of problems with the transaxle assemblies.
A manufacturing mistake can cause the transaxle components to wear and lead to a short-circuit. If this occurs, a driver will see warning lights and messages as the car enters fail-safe mode to reduce speed so the car can be driven safely for a short distance.
Lexus says it's possible the hybrid system could shut down completely while driving at any speed. However, the power steering and power brakes will continue to function normally.
The automaker didn't say more about the recall other than it should begin toward the end of November 2017 and that dealers will replace the transaxle assemblies.
